Off to the races....

A portion of the book club members met on Saturday to determine and finalize our guidelines. We decided until we have the kinks worked out, we will limit the book club to those who indicated an initial interest: Josey, Jennifer, Bec, Maggie, Sami, Brooke (when she has time), and me.

As publisher of the blog, and a co-creator, I volunteered to be the first to suggest books. Take a look at my suggestions, and vote (via comments) by Monday, October 26.

Firefly Lane, by Kristin Hannah
Velva Jean Learns to Drive, by Jennifer Niven
Henry's Sisters, by Cathy Lamb
Buster Midnight's Cafe, by Sandra Dallas

You will notice a strong "women's book" theme. I'm not sure why, but that's what I was drawn to this time.

  1. Kris...you picked 4 very interesting books! I am having trouble choosing. Can we read all four as our first four books?...haha!

I will be happy with any of them but here is my ranking:
    1. Henry's Sisters
    2. Firefly Lane (alghouth neck and neck with #1)
    3. Buster Midnight's Cafe
    4. Velva Jean Learns to Drive

Thank you! I am totally excited!

  2. No ifs, ands, or buts, I would chose Firefly Lane as my number one pick! I will be a good sport and read whatever the majority votes.

  3. I will be happy to read anything you all choose. My first pick is Buster Midnight's Cafe.

    Beckie

And, PS, I'm Mrs. B because I established my blogger i.d. for my AP class! They don't call me Beckie (at least not to my face--I don't know what they call me behind my back!)

  4. Funny...Becky, I knew you were going to choose that book. It does look like a good one. What happens in the case of a tie...does Kris get to have the deciding vote? :)

  5. and I spelled Beckie wrong...good daughter in law...

  6. You are a good daughter-in-law because you caught your mistake and fixed it! Plus you gave her those cute kids. Yes, Jen and I (co-founders of this illustrious group) determined that the "hostess" (there's those apostrophes again) will make the final decision in the case of a tie.

  7. I think I will be my mothers daughter and vote for what she voted for. Although I did suggest that book to Aunt Kris before. So my vote is Firefly Lane.

  8. Tomorrow at midnight (MDT) is the deadline to vote for our book selection. I am casting my vote for Henry's Sisters. That means thus far we have two votes for Firefly Lane, two votes for Henry's Sisters, and one vote for Buster's Midnight Cafe. Once Sami and Brooke cast their vote, we will have our book. In case of a tie, the hostess (me!) will make the final determination. I will accept bribes.

  11. So, Ladies, the votes are in. The winner is Firefly Lane, by Kristin Hannah. The book is available in paperback. I will give you all a couple of days to access (buy, borrow, etc) the book. I will post my initial review on November 18, which is four weeks and a few days from right now. If anyone needs more time than that, let me know as the month progresses. Enjoy the book!

  12. Well, I was late to comment and get in on the party. Please let me know when the kinks are worked out and you are open to new members again. I think I could manage to read a book every six weeks and I would love to be using my brain. Maggie, I am really sorry we missed your wedding and Kris will you please send pictures!!!

  14. Dear fellow book club memebers. I just picked up my book from the library today and am feeling behind the gun. Could you please all SLOW DOWN so I can catch up to you?! This book looks very long? Who picked this book, anyway?

  15. Ha ha! It does look long but it is a pretty quick read. I have slowed down myself. :)
