Our next book choices

From Josey:

Ok, here are my picks...very random as most came recommended by friends...

The Glass Castle: A Memoir (Alex Awards (Awards)) by Jeannette Walls
The History of Love: A Novel by Nicole Krauss
These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 (P.S.) by Nancy E. Turner
The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner

These are quite varied, as I was trying to find selections that would appeal to everyone...do we dare take a risk? I dunno...

Vote by Sunday, February 7. Enjoy!

  3. I vote for the History of Love. I've read These Is My Words and it is a wonderful book but I would enjoy reading something I haven't read before. Great selections, Josey.

  4. I'm not sure why my last post showed up with my name as my email address. I really hate computers and this online bookclub was my idea. Ugh.

  5. Wow...this is great. Depending upon how Ms. Maggie votes, I won't have to be the tie breaker...this is exciting!

  6. I say the History Of Love.

  7. Ok then...Thi History of Love it is! Do I pick the due date?

  8. Oh...and Beckie...I remember now reading reviews about The Glass Castle. People either loved it or hated it. Funny I couldn't even remember the books I suggested.

  9. I think we're all in for The History of Love. Josey, you pick the due date. I thought with the last book we gave ourselves too much time. I think maybe five weeks. What do you think? Let us know what the due date will be, and let the fun begin!

  10. Ok, the due date will be...the Ides of March (March 15)...how poetic!

  11. Hi Ladies...I hear that this book is not going so well for some. Honestly, I have been so busy, I haven't even started it yet. Maggie and I were chatting about maybe not using this book and picking another one? She is reading a book for another book club now and I think it is one that we had suggested previously. Thoughts?

  12. I have to admit that I abandoned this book long ago. It was waaaay too strange for my simple mind. I couldn't manage to keep the characters straight. I'm game for another book. What say others?

  13. I think the one Maggie is reading is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Has anyone read that book before?

  14. Yes! That's the title I was going to suggest because I know Kris and Maggie are both reading it for other book clubs and I've wanted to read it for several months. I've only heard good things about this book. I'm sorry I voted for The History of Love. I had forgotten that I had read it previously and did not enjoy it. I should have remembered that and warned you all!

  15. I'm in favor of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

  16. Ok, so then can we pick a new completion date? I don't think I can have the book read by March 15. :)

  17. I think a new completion date is appropriate. Josey, since you're the host, it's up to you; however, I propose around April 1 -- that way we'll be finished prior to my leaving on the cruise.

  18. Ladies, I'm afraid I'm going to have to be out of the discussion of Book #2 this time, if it's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'm number 216 on the library list...doesn't seem likely I'll get it in time.

    Sorry. Bec

  19. As co-founder of the group, I'm going to move us along. We will read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and begin discussion on Friday, April 2. Let the tattooing begin!

Bec, you probably won't get the book from the library in time, but I'll bet if you ask around, someone owns it and would lend it to you. Or, they probably have it for cheap at Barnes and Nobles or Costco. If I finish mine quickly, I can even send it on to you.

  20. It will be a book club discussion about two books. We'll discuss (or tear apart) The History of Love since I have read it and several people started it! I think we'll enjoy The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. If we can't complete the discussion before Kris leaves on the cruise, we'll just keep talking until we're satisfied. Happy reading!

  21. Sounds fine to me. Sorry I did not respond sooner about the date, I had trouble logging on from work yesterday...my computer is on its last MB. Anyway, I was going to recommend the April 1 date, so I am great with April 2. I have started the Tatoo book...

Beckie, prior to this book, I ordered my book club books from Amazon for about 5 bucks. :)

  22. Hello Ladies! Good discussion about the Dragon book.
Jen is the host for the our next discussion, and here are her book choices:
Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
Kabul Beauty School - an American Woman Goes Behind the Veil by Deborah Rodriguez
A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
Women of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama
Please have your choices to me by Saturday, April 24.
Since I'm posting this from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, I'm not going to link it to Amazon. You will all have to check Amazon for yourselves! Also, I am posting our choices via a comment, because I neglected to bring all of your email addresses, and this way Ethereal Reader will notify you electronically.
By the way, Jen and I, as Ethereal Reader co-founders, made an executive decision that we are going to vote in secret this time. So, rather than making your book selection via a comment, please email your choice to me at kzmclain@comcast.net. Once I have everyone's vote, I will post the name of our next book.
